Some of you may have heard me talk about the movement that's been happening in Chile to improve education at the university and K-12 level. This is obviously something that has greatly impacted my time here. For one thing, most universities are "en paro," which means that classes have been suspended for the time being. Some universities and K-12 schools are "en toma," which means that the students have taken control of the campus and are not allowing professors to enter the buildings; while others are still functioning like normal.
I have struggled with how to present this information to people in the U.S. for several reasons. First and foremost, I have not done enough investigation into the arguments from both sides to portray an unbiased explanation of what's going on. And also, the cultural component to this debate is something that's very hard for me as a person from the United States to understand.
In the end, I've decided to share some photos with you taken by FECH during recent protests and marches. It is a student organization from the Universidad de Chile who is a key player in this debate. My hope is that the photos will give you a glimpse into this particular aspect of Chilean culture or perhaps even motivate you to do your own research into the topic of Chilean student movements. This whole process has been going on for about a month now and I have just recently begun to realize how unprecedented an event this is for Chile's history----regardless of the outcome.
